Alcazar's 'Crying at the discotheque' may have been the soundtrack to Alex Rasmussen's huge attack in the closing minutes of the 2009 Six Days of Copenhagen; but the only tears shed some 17 laps later were those of joy as home boy, 'Razi' and his Denmark and Saxo Bank 'other half,' Michael Mørkøv sent the full house home happy from Ballerup Super Arena.

On the penultimate night it had looked like the best the young Danes could hope for would be second behind the swashbuckling William Tell duo of Franco Marvulli and Bruno Risi.

But as the first tread band broke the finish line timing beam on the stroke of midnight on Tuesday, the classy Swiss had to settle for third, denied their hat trick at Copenhagen by the young men in the legendary number seven, 'Danish flag' jersey, but also behind the Netherlands duo of Peter Schep and Danny Stam.

Schep, Lampater, and some other guy.

The Dutch men had looked the freshest in the 70 minute chase which decide the race and indeed, finished level on laps with the Danes.

But the home team's domination of the nightly flying laps and dernys meant that they had a far superior points total as the witching hour fell.

VeloResults was with the winners throughout the day of this, their third six day win; Grenoble having fallen to them for the last two years.

Today's headlines!

Breakfast, and it's not every day you have your orange juice with a legend; but Patrick Sercu is sitting just two tables away from us this morning - we're in the same room, so I'm claiming it as "breakfast with the Flemish Arrow!"

TV cameras everywhere.

The TV cameraman and reporter have tailed Michael the whole day. Massage, lunch, getting ready for the race, during the race - it's a pain for us; but that's what life's like when you become a showman.

Talking of TV, one of the Danish networks is covering the final night, live.

Full House.

When we arrive there are strangers everywhere - and kilometres of cables.

Jakob Piil, who was the last Danish winner here, with Jimmy Madsen, four years ago, is doing the TV pundit thing - he still looks in good shape.

Jacob Piil makes an appearance.

The rolling presentation of the field sees Michael and Alex receive a rapturous reception from the big crowd.

Marvulli wins more wine, in one of the sprints - these races baffle us, but the boys come back with lots of prizes, win or loose, so we're not complaining.

Jens-Erik has been a bit 'down' all week, but he's perked-up today; could that be because it's pay day?

Jacob Moe says farewell.

Dernys, Franco hates them, I've never seen him win behind them; Michael's been dominant here, but Stam takes this one.

Bruno takes the Derny racing in his stride.

The race was no sooner finished than the little beasts were scurried off into the back of vans and estate cars and are offsky; next outing, Cremona, Italy - 2,500 kilometres away.

Casper Jørgensen with Michael, Alex, and Jens-Erik.

Casper Jørgensen comes to visit us; with Alex, Michael and Jens-Erik he made up the silver medal winning 3:56 Beijing Danish team pursuit squad.

He was supposed to ride the six, but injury prevented him - it doesn't stop him from laughing all the time, though.

Everyone is twitchy; the final chase is on all of their minds.

How does Danny go so fast with them skinny legs?

The flying lap - Bartko & Lampater clock 12:867 to Razi & Mørkøv's 12:996; the crowd are quiet after that one.

The mechanics are packing, the discs have gone, but not the 'second' bikes that are used for time trials and behind the dernys.

Nearly time to go.

The mechanics learned a hard lesson in Bremen; with 15 laps to go in the final chase there was an almighty crash which 'totalled' several bikes.

The mechanics had stripped and packed the 'second' bikes away for the journey to the next race - but had to rebuild them pronto to let the race be concluded.

A visitor, 'BS' the ex army man who puts the Saxo Bank team through it's paces; (have a look at Ed's article on Pez with Jonathan Bellis) Michael tells us that all the team, including him, are waiting on a character assessment arriving from 'BS' and his advisers, based on what they had seen at the 'Survival Camp."

Bjarne Riis, love the man or hate him, he doesn't do things by halves.

l to r: Christophe, BS, Michael.

BS is accompanied by eccentric Saxo Bank mechanic, Christophe - he doesn't let us down with his new, dyed blonde hair do.

On the last night, it's easy to let the cabins go, but I force myself to 'do the rounds,' tidy the shoes, fold the clothes for the tenth time, check the drinks, ask the guys if they need anything.

There are kids in the enclosure tonight, they argue about who to seek autographs from; meanwhile, just centimetres away sits a quiet, anonymous, older guy - Patrick Sercu, the most successful six day rider in history and an athlete of amazing versatility.

The man was Olympic kilometre champion, world sprint champion and green jersey in the Tour.

The sprints, and the guys just go through the motions, that 70 minute chase hangs in the air like a ghost.

There's a 'special event;' a presentation for Jacob Moe - it's his last race and he gets a 'guard of honour,' flowers and big respect from the crowd.

"Born down in a dead man's town."

'Hollywood' gives us 'We will rock you' and 'Born in the USA' one more time; "Thank you for the entertainment, Mr. Holloway - it's been outstanding," says the announcer - I'll second that.

Tomorrow night at this time, I'll miss Daniel and his crazy fun.

Franco leans on me, the crowd is counting down for the start of a killer 70 minute chase, but the big guy still has a wink for the crowd.

Bang!

I give him an almighty shove. .

"Cara mia, mine . . ."

The Continentals and Schwalbes begin to thunder on the pine.

The next 70 minutes will decide whose names are painted on the fence above the banking as winners of the 2009 Six Days of Copenhagen.

But first I have to empty and disinfect the pee pails and strip out our neat little cabins which we tried so hard to make comfortable for our guys.

By the time I do that, the clock says 49 minutes to go and the overall standings are: Rasmussen & Mørkøv 230 points; Risi & Marvulli 208 points; Stam & Schep 146 points, all on the zero lap.

Bartko & Lampater are one lap back and de Ketele & Mertens are crumbling at five laps.

Half distance, 35 to go and it's status quo, except that the Belgians are seven back and Mertens looks very rough. The music is hot, the racing's not. For me, it's Stam and Schep; they look the perkiest. Daniel Holloway misses a change, Colby has to do a double spell - ouch!

The minnows are clawing the odd lap now - a sure sign that the tempo isn't savage. They know that Sercu is watching and he want's men who go for laps - he has crowds to please.

Schep changes bikes; those tyres look just fine to me!

Leif Lampater - destined to be a capo.

Big Bob Bartko doesn't look like he's having fun; but team mate Leif Lampater looks composed and fresh - I think he'll be 'the man,' soon.

The count down board switches from minutes to laps - 45 to go.

'Vamos a la playa!' the Balearic beat pumps; are they kidding - it's Denmark in February!

The results board hasn't changed it's rap, the boys still lead on points from the Swiss and Dutch on the same lap.

Kris and his boys.

Kris tells me to go and check the 'kontrol' notification; Jens-Erik and the white number from the winning team are the ones that affect us.

Stam and Schep snaffle a lap; they make it look easy, and now they lead by 250 metres.

Marvulli and Risi try and try to get them back, but Lampater closes them down each time.

On their way to glory.

The laps tick down - 20, 19, 18 and then the roof lifts off as Alex launches and seals his place, with Michael up there on the fence.

Michael hurts - but it'll be worth it.

After the presentations, it's chaos as everybody wants a piece of the winners - TV, press, photographers, friends, family, fans and autograph hunters.

I have to keep an eye on the guys' mobile phones and gear as Kris starts to shuttle our kit to the camper.

Numero Uno!

It's gone 1.30 am; hand shakes, pictures, laughs, cuddles, kisses, maybe a few tears and it's time for the three hour drive through the frost and mist to Billund and Ryanair.

Billund airport.

Copenhagen?

It's been wonderful, wonderful.

Me and ma boys!

Susie, my chow chow would love these meat balls; cold, greasy, smelly with around one percent meat content; it’s a pity she’s not here - but think how awful it would be if she bit Danny Stam.

Dinner time at the restaurant; day one the food was cool, but as the week goes on, the menu refuses to budge and the temperature of the food drops; ‘not good for riders to eat cold pasta,’ says Ronnie our number two soigneur.

Ronnie saves the day; he’s been ‘making massage’ to the guy who owns the restaurant and a gorgeous pizza arrives for him, of which I get half – those Belgian guys aren’t all bad.

Day five in Copenhagen, the food may be getting colder but the racing is getting hotter. The biggest race on the card is the 75 kilometre handicap chase; where the big teams give away up to six laps on the little teams.

Ronnie.

But that’s not ‘til 22.30; there’s a lot to do before then.

Exile and the O’jays take me through my helmet and shoe cleaning routine; Franco has a MET helmet and Northwave shoes, Alex and Michael are co-ordinated (you’d expect nothing less from two of Bjarne’s boys) on Bell helmets and Specialized shoes(with ‘wind-up’ wire closure system – cool) and Jens-Erik is with MET and Shimano.

Jens-Erik said to me yesterday; ’Ed, what are these wipes for?’ ‘I use them to clean your helmet and shoes, every day Jens.’

‘Really!’ he replied; being a runner is just like being a housewife, no one appreciates you.

Franco messes around while the amateurs race.

Franco arrives to read, text and Skype from the trackside cabin, he doesn’t like the claustrophobia of the main cabin, which is below the track; I know what he means, the air down there is heavy and stale. If he wants to chat, that’s cool, but if he’s thoughtful, I just work round him and give him peace.

‘Should I train or have a sleep, Ed?’ ‘Do a few laps Franco, loosen the legs off.’

He laps the track with Michael Mørkøv’s brother, Jesper who is also riding the six – more on him later.

Tony Doyle (23) and Patrick Sercu (88) - 111 six wins between them!

It’s ‘Mini-Six’ time and the track has to be cleared to allow the stars of the future to do their thing – legs whirl at a furious rate on restricted gears and the hand slings are better than any I’ve ever given.

Keeping an eye on the young 'uns, Franco shoots the breeze with his fellow pro's.

The music is great, 60’s and 70’s pop; ‘Chicory Tip’ with ‘Son of my Father,’ jeez, I haven’t heard that in ages, the first UK number one to feature a synthesiser, written by Giorgio Moroder - I wish I had a recycle bin in my head!

UIV Cup time; that’s the sixes for the Under-23 riders. Back in the 70’s we used to watch the amateur sixes at Gent; it was like a more violent version of Rollerball – Maurice Burton’s backside spent more time on the boards than it did in the saddle.

Mini-six winners.

If you’ve ever wondered how agents do their job of finding young talent; there’s ex-Tour of Flanders winner Rolf Sørensen trackside, encouraging the young Danes.

The Danish media re going crazy with Alex and Michael; today they were even filming them putting their shoes on.

Alex and Michael can't really relax - their every move is captured by Danish TV.

There’s Bruno; he skips up the stairs, he’s recovered from that virus he had – one look tells me that.

Patrick Sercu has arrived, there must be deals to be done, that cell phone is a fixture on his ear; when I was a boy he was my idol.

I saw him once in a nocturne (night criterium, under the street lights) in Concarneau; he had on matching black and white patent leather shoes and helmet, Brooklyn shorts and his recently acquired Tour de France green jersey, astride his sparkling blue Gios Torino he was the closest thing I’ve ever seen to a God.

Patrick Sercu makes another deal - the closest thing Ed's ever seen to a God.

Flying lap time and Dirk slides the rear discs into Michael’s Principia and Alex’s Pinarello – Dirk tells me that the rear fork ends on the Pinarellos are so hard that it’s difficult to get the track nuts to bite; he has to rough them with a file.

Jacob Moe comes in, his mechanic is AWOL and he puts his hand out for me to pull him to a stop; with some soigneurs this is seen as bad protocol – they think you’re trying to poach their rider.

Schep/Stam get 13.43 for the lap, Marvulli/Risi 13.40 – yes, Bruno’s better tonight.

Alex and Michael are up and rolling for their turn earlier than usual – that’s a good sign. And the watch confirms it with 13.01 – more flowers.

Tayeb Braikia, who is one of the race officials drops in to congratulate his countrymen, Tayeb won this six in 1999, he was a Danish champion on road and track; winning road races in the US, Scandinavia and Europe, including the GC of the Circuit Franco Belge.

l to r: Alex, Tayeb Brakia, and Michael.

The Ballerup Gran Prix is next; a knock out sprint series. Franco goes down to home boy Mark Hester, who’s quick, but not Franco quick. Hester milks the applause as Franco flashes me a wink from the banking.

Interview time and I wander round to see Daniel “Born in the USA” Holloway and his Garmin team mate Colby Pearce – cool guys and their words will be on Pez soon.

Daniel “Born in the USA” Holloway and Colby Pearce.

Sebastián Donadío the six-day-man-cum-singer from Argentina comes to see me, he wants my pictures for his Facebook page; ‘no problem, Sebastian.’

Sebastián Donadío.

There’s a Madison behind the derny; Alex and Michael cruise to the win.

Balustrade sprint time and it’s Tim Mertens who leads the string as; ‘almost heaven, West Virginia’ pumps out; Tim isn’t bad, but he’s not Daniel Holloway.

Tim Mertens leads the black number riders Balustrade sprint.

Next up, it’s the man from North Ca. himself, leading the entire field high on the bankings; getting Brian May’s guitar solo in ‘We will rock you,’ down to a ‘tee,’ behind him riders clap, but no one else tries to handle the Stratocaster.

Søren Lilholt - GPE3 winner. Respect

It’s almost chase time; but there’s Søren Lilholt and it’s not every day you meet a GPE3 winner; ‘...but you want to know how I win, Ed?’

‘Yes, of course, Søren!’ I reply, like a school kid, completely forgetting that three of the world’s best six day riders are supposed to be the focus of my attention. ‘There are 12 of us in the final, I can beat them all in the sprint, I know it, but I take no chances and jump them, riding alone, winning on my own.’

Kris gently reminds me that we’ve got a 75 kilometre Madison about to start; I shake hands with Søren and wish him well.

The E3 wasn’t his only big win; he was world junior road race champion in 1983, won the Tour of Luxembourg, Route Adelie, Danish pro road championship and a stage in Paris Nice.

Eddy the mechanic.

‘Cara Mia’ blasts; ‘...darling you’ll be mine, ‘til the eeennd of time!’ wails Tony Christie - the lap board is more pragmatic; ‘300 laps,’ is all it has to say.

Most sixes run chases over a maximum one hour, this one will be closer to one-and-a-half hours; and there’s a catch – the big teams are ‘giving away’ up to six laps on the small teams.

The capo should pull this back, but they have to race for it; there’s no settling in, Marvulli/Risi, Stam/Schep, Rasmussen/Mørkøv and de Ketele/Mertens set about the job from the gun. Franco and Bruno in particular look great – like overall winners, maybe.

It’s not that the little teams go out of the back, they just don’t have the engines to take lap gains and their lead slides like ‘snow off a dyke,’ as we say in Scotland.

Rolf Sørensen gets involved in events!

What’s supposed to happen in the script is that the head boys snuff out the advantage towards the end and fight it out among themselves; but Jesper Mørkøv and his Austrian partner, Andreas Muller haven’t read that page.

There’s a lull and ‘Mini Mørkøv’ attacks. The big teams think, ‘what the ?’

Big brother, Michael just happens to be on Jesper’s wheel and swings up, the gap opens, the crowd is on it’s feet. The big guns think, ‘this is good for the show,’ and let them take the lap – they know that the youngsters have no chance in the sprint.

The organiser isn’t happy and tells Kris that Michael should have shut his brother down; maybe he was an only child?

Risi is riding like a scalded Swiss polecat tonight, there’s now way they’ll loose this one.

Chaos.

I can’t take many notes, the guys are thirsty and I spend the night making energy drink, filling bottles then retrieving them from the far reaches of the track, where most of the guys discard them.

The real pros stick the empty bottle into the back of their shorts then drop it back with us a lap or two later; unfortunately our thirstiest guys, Alex and Franco don’t stick to that rule.

It could be worse; a few years ago I was looking after the New Zealand team pursuiter, Marc Ryan in his first six at Hasselt six in Belgium. During the first chase, all the bottles disappeared; ‘Marc,’ I said, ‘what are you doing with those bottles?’ ‘I’ve just been lobbing ‘em into the crowd, mate, isn’t that what you do?’

Iggy Pop blasts, ‘Real Wild Child’ – he must have seen Franco; the big Swiss is rampant and makes the sprint look easy.

Flowers and a pretty girl to present them; what more could a six day man want?

Franco & Bruno, winners of the 75 kilometre madison chase - just another part of the six day riders' job.

Money! I hear you say – that’s tomorrow, until then, ciao, ciao.

But, as a Colombo used to say, ‘Just one more ‘ting, sir.’

As the boys sit in the cabin and I try to make sense of the piles of washing, the broad figure of Robert Bartko stalks in; there’s a little hush and we all think, uh!oh!

The big German goes over to where Madison hero Jesper is sitting, pats him on the back and gaves him a nod; Jesper is surprised, but his day is made.

Respect, Robert.

"I was second in the derny, behind Muller, and he’s very good – why don’t you test me?” says Michael Berling to the UCI guy who has to chaperone Michael Morkov to the doping controle.

Franco pipes up; “Grasmann was last in the derny, that’s a suspicious result!”

The UCI guy has heard it all before; “I just chaperone the rider, who gets tested is nothing to do with me.”

We leave Michael to his fate and head for the restaurant; it’s nearly 02.00 am Sunday when we eat and close to 03.00 am when I get to bed.

What seems like five minutes later I’m organising the clothes, filling the bottles, tidying the cabins, polishing shoes and helmets . . .

Part of Ed's daily chores - the washing.

Still, it’s Sunday and the programme finishes at six – deep joy.

The riders arrive just minutes before the race and there’s a scramble for clothing and bikes for the rolling presentation.

Alex shouts to me from the string, I look up as he saws at an imaginary steering wheel; they’re threatening to tow his lovely new Audi away because he’s badly parked – again.

Down to the cabin, find the key, back up, find the car, then a 15 minute hassle to find a parking space; there are no problems with a small crowd today: all the car parks are full.

Waiting for the racing to start.

By the time I get back up to the track it’s time for the World cyclo cross champs on Dirk’s computer; Albert runs away with it – damn!

I had a two beer wager on with Jered from Pez that Boom would win, he lost too, though – he’s a Nys man.

At the start, when Nys and Albert are attacking Boom in classic, ‘one-two’ fashion, Eddy the mechanic explains to me; ‘we cannot have a Dutchman winning our discipline, so to start, they are killing him – slowly!’

Yes, that Belgian/Dutch dislike thing is all just imagined.

Leif Lampater.

It’s time for my Leif Lampater interview; he’s a nice guy and once I slow my 160 kph Fife-speak down a little, we communicate just fine. That one will be on Pez soon.

Edwin Starr is making ‘Eye to eye contact’ for the flying lap, Marvulli has taken up position in the home straight to organise the Mexican waves; the atmosphere is great, even though Alex and Michael have a bad day and don’t win.

Tony Doyle and Franco think about the money they'll make in London.

Another face from the past appears, it’s Tony Doyle, and he’s showing a prospective sponsor of the proposed London six what the game is all about; he’s picked a good day to do it – good music, good vibe and a full house.

I’ve set up another interview; with ‘Mr. Born in the USA’ himself, Daniel Holloway and his older compadre, Colby Pearce.

They’re nice guys too, but we have to cut the interview short due to an inconvenient final 40 minute chase in the six – more tomorrow.

It is Sunday, so the chase isn’t what you’d call savage; Danish child actor turned teacher and sometime six day rider Mads Bugge, who’s face is a mask of permapain in every chase, takes a lap with his team mate Matthe Pronk.

Have I missed something - Is this a Hans Christian Andersen benefit day?

I begin to slip away, thinking about what’s for dinner and my hotel bed, when Bill Haley jolts me out of my torpor; ‘One, two, three o’clock, four o’clock, rock . . . . ‘

Michael & Razi warm up.

‘My’ boys are on the attack, but Franco snuffs it out, pronto – he looks better today; loose, rangy and fast.

But it’s a storm in a teacup and the bunch settle down to watching the clock tick down – it’s always a bad sign when the official photographers slip away with 15 minutes to go.

Up on the track you can see the big guys over-running the wheel in front when the little guys go through.

There are six teams on the zero lap and it’s down to the sprint; with four to go, Franco and Bruno take off – it’s not their day, this is for show.

The number seven team of Rasmussen and Morkov take it and the house goes mad; the buzz is good as I take their caps, towels and bottles round – again.

Cabin traffic jam.

Immediately after the race there’s a throng around the cabin, exciting, but a pain if you’re trying to get washing away and the cabins tidied.

We’re in the restaurant by 07.00 and out soon after; Sebastian Donadio has commandeered the Hammond and is belting the numbers out much to the joy of his fellow competitors, including Danny and Bruno – thereby guaranteeing his contracts for next season, no doubt.

The restaurant proprietor’s eyes light up at the thought of all those drinks orders.

We eat up, say our apologies and go – it’s lovely and quiet in my hotel room and the bed looks so nice.

Two days to go, and in my book Alex and Michael are worth the win, but does the ‘Blue Train’ agree?

Stay tuned - ciao, ciao!

The highlight of the afternoon was the break dancing competition, manfully judged by Messrs. Rasmussen and Donadio. It’s not well known, but break dancing has a long connection with cycling.

Some years ago, Viktor, Dave and I were at the Belgian elite road championships when we met the old QuickStep soigneur, waiting to feed his boys. We got to chatting and he explained to us that Frank Vandenbroucke was a renowned man around the boogie box in West Flanders.

Straight faced, I asked the old boy if Johan Museeuw was into it too, we thought he was going to drop with a seizure; ‘Nae, nae, nae!’ as if the very thought was sacrilege.

VeloResults are in Copenhagen (south of Sweden) for day three of the six and it’s time for the horror that is - the afternoon session.

Politics; I asked you to remind me.

When we walked into the restaurant last night, at some time wearing-on for 02.00 am – Danny Stam was fulsome in his greetings; "Ah! Kris, how are you?"

Danny usually looks at our little group as he would something unpleasant he’s picked up on his shoe.

I didn’t have to ponder the reason for his happy greeting for long; "I hear you have problems with your soigneur!" he chortled with no attempt to conceal his glee.

It’s true that there had been a little tiff in the cabin, but these things happen when it’s gone midnight and you are all working hard; it was soon sorted out.

However, in the closed little circle that is the six days, had Obama been exposed as an old drinking pal of George Bush’s, it would have been second story to our ‘problems.’

This morning, two of the mechanics were on me as soon as I walked up the stairs, however, when you’re a runner – the lowest form of six day life - it’s easy to plead ignorance.

Saturday's programme.

Jens-Erik Madsen came back from his virus today, when he walked into the track centre, I thought; ‘I know that boy,’ the penny dropped and I had to sprint downstairs and organise his race clothes, pronto.

‘Game on!’ go and get Michael Smith Larsen’s mitts; then deep heat for Dirk, the mechanic’s back pains, move Alex’s car – but don’t forget that there are riders to change; drinks to organise and clothes to dry.

This is what a UCI drug test chaperone looks like.

Michael wins another derny race; ‘derny king’ I say as I dry him, but he’s hardly sweated, he just shakes his head – Michael sets himself high standards, winning easy races gives him no joy.

Afternoon sessions always remind me of the line in the Hot Chocolate song; ‘’just goin’ through the motions.’

After the 75 lap chase, which closes the session, not one rider uses the basin of water I’ve laid out – they just want off the track, something to eat and maybe a nap before the night train departs.

I skip dinner in favour of my camera and laptop, tapping away as the juniors and under-23’s hurtle past just yards away.

Sebastian & Alex do a Simon Cowall.

It's evening now, and show time. I ask Bruno’s soigneur how his man is doing; Michel makes a gesture that his legs have been sawn off.

The first chase fails to ignite, but like Kris says; ‘Half the peloton is sick.’

All the big teams have a theme tune, which blasts out over the PA when they go on the attack; for Rasmussen/Morkov it’s ‘Rock around the clock,’ with Stam/Schep it’s a bit more up to date with ‘You’ve got to pump it up,’ whilst for Marvulli/Risi it’s the William Tell overture

But it’s Bill Haley who’s playing as the gun fires to end the chase; the crowd are delighted; it’s just a shame that there aren’t more of them.

The price of fame - giving time to the media.

Saturday night is traditionally family and friends night at the sixes and there’s a constant flow of mums, dads, pals, ex-stars, glamorous women and drunken guys to distract us – and the riders.

Kris doesn’t like it; ‘They should be resting and recovering,’ – but it’s all part of the show.

Jens Erik.

I suppose it’s the old ‘time tester’ in me, but I love the flying lap; so skilful, so fast, great atmosphere – and it can’t be ‘arranged.’

Jacob Moe and Luke Roberts rattle off an impressive 13.10 but big Bartko and his ‘on the way up’ partner, Lampater put that in the recycle bin with 13.01.

The presh is fully on our boys; ‘Eye of the Tiger’ batters our ears, the crowd stand and clap as Michael the greyhound takes that Principia within millimetres of the fence, he wants every bit of height and speed when they make the dive for the line – the sling is perfect, Alex the big bulldog growls through the timing beam, the crowd goes apeshit as he thrashes that Pinarello around the sprinters line, BANG! and it’s 12.94 – terrific!

A pretty girl and flowers.

It get my opportunity to see how the VIPs’ do it as I amble round to give the boys their Saxo Bank caps for the presentation, there was a day when I would have run, but that was when I was a rookie.

Brian Holm interviews Michael.

Former pro, Brian Holm interviews Michael straight after the race, my Danish is non-existent but Michael must be saying the right things - the crowd applaud enthusiastically.

l to r. Michael Berling, Michael Smith-Larsen, and Bo Hamburger.

More visitors, Bo Hamburger - former Fleche Wallonne winner - drops by, he’s had a ‘colourful’ shall we say, past, but he’s wearing well, he looks around 19 years-old.

‘You look good, Bo,’ I tell him; ‘are you still going out on the bike?’ He laughs, ‘In Denmark? It’s too cold!’

l to r. Alex, Brian & Michael.

It’s ‘Born in the USA’ time and Daniel Holloway is up there, clapping, playing air guitar, pretending he’s an aeroplane; when the sprint finally comes after ten laps, he’s too busy applauding the crowd to bother contesting it – good fun, he deserves more people to see him, though.

What it's all about - happy customers.

‘Cara Mia’ blasts, I think it’s Tony Christie doing the vocals, but whoever it is, it’s great – and it’s time for the session closing one hour chase.

It’s no ‘death race,’ the peloton is compatto until late in the race; a 1000 euro prime is the spur that Bruno needs to go for the lap, he shows a little flash of why he’s the best six day man on the planet, but the man isn’t well and the Danes shut him down – this is a race.

Then it’s the Germans, Lampater/Bartko who go, Alex looks rough, Michael swings up – it’s someone else’s turn, Daniel Holloway is strong, strong, strong and hauls the Germans back.

Bruno again but Franco looks heavy legged, the Danes bring him back, Stam goes, it’s shut down, he goes again, there’s a lull and in a trice Stam’s skinny legs whirl him onto the back of the string.

It’s over, ten to go, no one has time to bring it back, Danny will win the final sprint too – oops, sorry, it was Schep!

Danny Stam.

As I wipe the sweat from Michael’s slim, sweating body he tells me; ‘It was tough tonight,’ if Michael Morkov says it’s tough, you best believe it!

With any luck, we’ll be in bed for 02.30 – aye, an easy life!

Franco rips up the programme - and the pain with it.

"Oh Copenhagen, Copenhagen south of Swee-den,
sweeter than the sweetest honey, sweeter than the sweetest wine,
in Copenhagen city too, you can make a dream come true!"

Deeply profound Europop lyrics that start each day’s session in just the right thought provoking vein – well, maybe you have to be here!

It’s a small world; Thursday night at dinner we were sitting beside the Argentinean rider, Sebastian Donadio, who’s a cool guy; he asked me where I was from, I told him; “Ahh! You must know Peter Jacques!”…

Sebastian runs a cycling school back in Buenos Aires and has been riding a few ‘races to nowhere,’ this autumn, he’s a multi task master; as well as the work on the bike, he does a bit of chanting behind the Casio organ.

Sebastian not singing.

I caught up with ‘Born in the USA’ man, Garmin’s Daniel Holloway, he was telling me that he didn’t have the best legs on day one; he’d just flown in from the States at 3.30 pm.

Daniel surfs.

Daniel and his team mate, Colby Pearce have signed up for a Pez interview on Sunday, I’m looking forward to that.

Sebastian singing.

Franco wins a sprint series and that’s another job to do – lug the huge bottle of wine he wins back to the cabin.

Bruno Risi is out, sick. Franco can’t ever remember Bruno being neutralised; the ‘master’ is an unusual colour as he walks down the stairs to his cabin then an early bed.

Bartko texts his mum to say he doesn't feel well.

Alexander Aeschbach’s partner, bear-of-a-man Robert Bartko, is sick too, so the two Swiss are paired together – just like the old days in Grenoble.

Maybe Bartko got altitude sickness - look at that stack-height!

Michael wins the derny without breaking sweat; ‘It’s embarrassing how slow we were going,’ he tells me – I guess anything under 60 kph is slow after a 3:56 team pursuit ride.

The 30 minute chase turns into a bit of a race; maybe it’s because Sylvester is blasting; “Do you wanna funk?’

She's back - if only I was 30 years younger and had some hair...

After the blur of jersey changes, dryers and drinks, it’s time for a song from our man from Buenos Aires – he’s not bad at all – if edging just a tad too close to ‘Murph and the Magictones’ from the Blues Brothers movie for comfort.

We get a visitor; Hans Henrik Orsted, ex world pursuit champion and sea level hour record holder, ranked seventh in the Danish ‘six day wins hall of fame’ with eight victories; Palle Lykke is number one on 21.

Michael, Kris, and Hans Henrik Oersted - respect.

Kris used to look after Hans Henrik, back in the 80’s when the Dane and Britain’s Tony Doyle duelled obsessively for the world title, year in and year out.

Break time and the band show no mercy to any song they perform, savaging one good tune after another – they wouldn’t last five minutes at Newtongrange Miners Welfare.

My boys wind it up.

Flying lap time; but it’s a no contest as Alex and Michael torch the track, a little slower than last night, but a Chris Hoy-style kick seals it and the meagre crowd is on its feet – nearly.

It’s ‘Born in the USA’ time and Daniel does his thing; I desert my station to get some snaps from the top of the banking – hope you like them.

Daniel leads the fun.

The focus is on De Ketele & Mertens

More fun and games.

It’s time for the 60 minute chase, but it’s all a bit flat with such a poor crowd; apparently there’s a big handball match on TV tonight and the Danish national team is playing.

The Italians take a lap; I’d forgotten about them, it can’t be that fast tonight.

Matthe Pronk is struggling; he’s rocking and rolling like it was the three mile grass champs at Ceres Highland Games – in the rain.

The Dutchman is a little eccentric, for example, he doesn’t have a mechanic, he does all the ‘spanner stuff’ himself’ – that’s like Lewis Hamilton replacing his own clutch.

Michael Morkov meanwhile, is cruising; Pronk hirples past again as the PA blasts, ‘Walkin’ on Sunshine,’ – more like treacle, for Matthe.

The lap board shows 24 minutes as Bill Haley gets the older soigneurs hips into motion, ‘one, two, three o’clock …

The number 7 jersey - a legend.

With 20 minutes to go, the riders remember that this is a race; Alex Rasmussen bridges to Peter Schep and Franco Marvulli, but Kenny de Ketele knows a good move when he sees one and is sprightly across the gap – this is more like it!

It’s apparent, if you know what you’re looking at, that the young Danes could win here; but will politics permit it?

Alex takes a late lap, but Marvulli/Aeschbach and Stam/Schep counter; it’s all down to the sprint on the line.

Alex and Michael go from six out, much to the delight of the crowd, but there are four old foxes behind them and it’s the tall figure of Marvulli who demonstrates what he once told me was his big strength; ‘I don’t loose much of my sprint at the end, no matter how hard it’s been.’

To the victors the spoils.

Before I can get Franco’s vest and jersey off, he has to go through the ritual of scoring the chase off the night’s programme, then ripping it up and tossing it in the bin; ‘When I tear it up and throw it away, I’m throwing away the pain in my legs too, ready to start fresh tomorrow.’

Franco trusts me - Aeschi isnt so sure.

I mention to Franco that one of the smaller teams was strong tonight; ‘Stupid!’ he replies, ‘In a six you have to know where you belong, if you’re five laps down you don’t chase the leaders, you look at who are one place above you; your race is with them, not the big teams.’

Then it was time for the washing – did I mention the politics? No? Remind me and I’ll tell you tomorrow.

What’s that music?

It’s Vera Lyne, ‘We’ll meet again,’ – I liked it better when they played Danny Kaye, ‘Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen’ as last song, never mind.

Ciao, ciao.

Two minutes ago I was wondering why I put myself through that nightmare journey from Portobello to Ballerup – the suburb of Copenhagen where the Super Arena and it’s pine velodrome live – two buses, a plane, another bus, a long train journey then waiting in the freezing cold of a Copenhagen night for my lift to the track.

But now I remember; the smell of the massage oil and cologne, the gleaming gems that are the bikes, the Europop, the hiss of the mechanics’ compressors, the thunder of expensive rubber on pine, the rattle of those one-eighth chains over the sprockets, a whiff of perfume as a glamorous spectator sashays past…

The crowd counts us down; the pistol cracks; I give Franco a hefty shove; ‘Cara Mia’ blasts from the PA and the 2009 Copenhagen 6 Dages Lob is well and truly under way.

Then there’s the thrill of working with some of the fastest men on the planet – Michael Morkov, Alex Rasmussen and Jens-Erik Madsen rode four kilometres in 3-56 at the Beijing Olympics – and a feeling that’s harder to put into words, that of being in a little world all of it’s own where nothing matters except the race.

Alex Rasmussen found his shoes!

Alex Rasmussen’s shoes went missing, we had to change cabins after spending ages setting things up just right, there’s moans from the mechanics about riders dumping them without warning, moans from the riders about the programme – yes, it’s just like a six should be!

The race director at Copenhagen, Henrik Elmgreen, likes to consider that his race is one of the last bastions of the ‘old school,’ sixes, sticking with long chases when most venues have long realised that in a world of instant gratification, most folks don’t want endless Madisons.

But at Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen it’s straight into a 60 minute ‘Abningsjagt‘ for the ‘squirrels,’ as they called the riders in the old days.

Michael goes over the top.

Alex drops down for a drink early in the chase; six day wisdom says that’s a bad sign, it’s certainly bad for me, I have to chase the discarded bottle half way round the track.

Half distance, and the late Rick James is telling us about his ‘Super Freak’ girlfriend; ‘the kind you don’t take home to mother!’ – I always wanted one like that!

Meanwhile Michael Smith Larsen looses the tail of the string as Alex drinks more and I keep trotting round the track.

No one looks ‘special’ tonight, Peter Schep looks as cool as usual, but not ‘super’ – it’s a lot easier to spot riders who look tired and/or rough, this evening.

Franco cruises.

The new slim line Alex Aeschbach isn’t enjoying it, Jacob Moe’s elbows are sticking out even further than usual tonight and even Bruno is panting a bit.

Michael Morkov gives Kris a wink from the string, though – that’s a good sign.

Pearce & Holloway get ready to change.

Ar-gen-tin-aaa! Here's Seb Donadio - he's raced at Meadowbank too!

Garmin Americans Colby Pearce and Daniel Holloway look at home, but the Argentineans, Sebastian Donadio and Angel Dario Collo find themselves on the wrong end of Peter Schep’s mighty hollers a few times.

Stam & Schep - two old hands.

The sprint starts late, just two out, and it’s Franco and Bruno who lift the flowers; Bruno Risi, a legend, how many bouquets is that - he’s won 57 sixes off 173 starts?

I’m ‘on;’ get a towel, hat and a drink to the finish line for Franco for the presentation, then trot back to the cabins and get Alex and Michael changed – helmets, jerseys, vests and mitts off, wipe their sweating torsos down with cologne, help them on with a fresh vest and jersey, get them drinks, put the sweaty clothes in the tumble drier.

When I tell folk I’m going to a six, they always tell me about the bars, clubs and places of ill-repute that they think I’ll be sampling; I just agree with them now and don’t even mention the pee pails.

There's a nicer class of photographers here.

It gets ‘blurry’ after that – wash bottles - fold jerseys - make Complan shakes - get tea - is that the ‘devil’ that’s on? - take Jens-Erik to the cabin because he’s sick – dernys, and Michael needs his shades - tidy the cabins – flying lap and I take a minute to watch ‘my’ boys, Alex and Michael.

Michael does the wind up laps, his built like a greyhound and his position on the bike is just right; long stem down tight on the top head race, seat set high, his back is flat and parallel to the boards – just like Hughie Porter.

Alex has lost weigh since last I saw him, he seems taller too – he’s tucked tight on Michael’s wheel as Michael accelerates through the bell; they dive off the last banking and there’s the hand sling.

Alex sits neat on the line, not moving around as much as some sprinters do, his long battle scarred legs are doing the job and, bang!

He stops the clock - fastest of the night, 69.18 kph, wow !

Franco keeps loose.

It’s the ‘balustrade sprints’ now, two 10 lappers with the white number rider from the team in one heat, the black rider number in the other.

It’s a light hearted affair; last time I was here, it was Frank Hoy who would lead the string around the top of the track as the PA blasted Dario G’s ‘Sunchyme’ and the riders did the hands high, then ‘Superman’ thing.

Holloway was born in the USA.

The first heat is a bit ‘flat,’ but for the second, it’s Garmin’s Daniel Holloway leading the string as ‘The Boss’ bets out ‘Born in the USA,’ at too many decibels; Holloway is patently mad, he gives us air guitar solos and simulated singing into the imaginary mic as he leads the string high on the track at 45 kph; the guys behind give it the hands high stuff but no one else is playing the air guitar!

I must get some pics of that man, tonight.

While Ed is hectic, Franco grabs a little "out" time.

It’s soon ‘Cara Mia’ time, this time it’s a 30 minute job and Kris leaves me to hold the fort and heads off to start the washing.

When I was a rookie, I used to wait until the chase was over before I budged from the trackside, but now I have the, you-know-what pails emptied and all the bottles washed before the race is half over.

Schep is still the coolest, Bartko the most bear-like and Jacob Moe’s is still the wheel I’d least like to be on.

Holloway is better at impersonating Bruce than he is at impersonating Bruno as a ‘quick lap gain’ turns into an epic.

Meanwhile Millie is telling us about ‘My Boy Lollipop,’ then its Alcazar, ‘Crying at the Discothèque,’ I love that 80’s Europop.

Bang!

Franco and Bruno take the flowers again.

Bruno, the Master.

I give the guys their last rub down; then it’s time to clear up, training tops, helmets, shoes, shades, socks, mitts – the guys just abandon them in the charge for the hotel.

As Franco studies his iPhone, a young Danish journo comes up with his recorder; ‘Um, do you feel good that, you, eh, lead the six days after, ah, this first night?’

Franco gives the journo's their soundbites.

“Leading at this stage is just like leading in a football match after 15 minutes, there are some strong teams up there; the Germans, Bartko and Lampater; the Dutchmen Schep and Stam; and of course the Danes, Rasmussen and Morkov – they were very disappointed not to make the podium in Berlin and will be out for a big result on their home track. Remember that these things are called SIX days!”

I couldn’t have put it better myself; there’ll be some more after day two – and I’ll do my best to get that ‘Born in the USA’ pic.

Ciao!
