<description>We have known Alex since he was a boy 12 when we took him out on our Sunday runs, there was four of us (last of the summer wines), and when he got home he would be in a bad state but the next Sunday he was back for another go.

We followed his racing in the local Meldons, the Tour of the Trossachs, the Girvan, and then when he raced in events down south like the Tour of Wales and the Tour of Britain, and in Europe then over in Asia.

I met an Irish rider in Madrid at the Worlds who rode with Alex in the Tour of Ireland - he thought Alex should have been looked at for National selection as we watched the entire GB team retire, then in the Tour of Scotland at Newton Stewart Alex got one of the Downing brothers up to 300 yds from the line and left him to win the bunch sprint.

Not a selfish rider, if anything a overlooked rider.
